Head of the School of Psychology, Professor Bill von Hippel, will be presenting a public lecture, "Surprising Truths about Happiness".

In this talk he will discuss research showing that people frequently don't know what makes them happy and what doesn't, and thus are often misdirected in their search for satisfaction in life.

He'll also discuss evolutionary and cultural origins of these misunderstandings, and how changes in people's goals might account for unexpected effects of ageing on happiness. Professor von Hippel received his BA from Yale University and his PhD from the University of Michigan. He has published over 80 papers, chapters, and edited volumes. His work has had extensive media coverage, and one of his projects was chosen by the New York Times as one of the '100 Ideas of the Year'.
