Honours Students

F.A.Q.

  • Q. When do I apply?
    A. Applications for entry to Honours by UQ students close on the last Friday in July of the year preceding admission. Applications for entry to Honours by non-UQ students close on the second Friday in December of the year preceding admission.
  • Q. When will I be notified about admission?
    A. BPsycSc students are guaranteed a fourth year as part of their degree and will therefore be asked to confirm their progression to the Fourth Year (as either an Honours or Pass Stream student). Students must have successfully completed the first three years (48 units) of their degree on the second Friday in December. Students undertaking Summer Semester to complete the 48 units will receive a conditional offer pending successful completion of 48 units.

UQ BA or BSc students with a GPA of 5.8 or higher will be made a conditional offer in August for entry into the Honours program in the following year. These conditional offers are dependent upon students maintaining their GPA through to the end of the year and graduating from their undergraduate degree. Full offers will be made to successful UQ applicants on the second Friday in December.

Non UQ Domestic Applicants will be advised of offers on the third Friday in January of the admission year.
  • Q. How do I enrol? What honours courses do I enrol in? What is the due date for enrolment?
    A. All students are expected to enrol via mySi-net as per the University enrolment dates for the relevant year.

BPySc students enrol into the relevant courses as per the course list available on the UQ Programs website. Students will be advised by the School if they are eligible to enrol in the Honours thesis or the Group Thesis.

BA and BSc students accepted into the Honours program enrol into the relevant courses as per the course list available on the UQ Programs website
  • Q. How do I enrol in a 4th year seminar course?
    A. Enrolment will be open via mySi-net after the Honours Orientation meeting in O-Wweek of Semester 1 (normally held in February each year). Seminars will be limited to 20 students on mySi-net. When the quota is reached no further enrolments will be permitted. Students can enrol in one Seminar only.
  • Q. How do I choose a supervisor? Who are the potential supervisors?
    A. You can browse the list of prospective supervisors then use the on-line preference form to nominate your preferences.
  • Q. Do I need to attend the Honours Orientation meeting to be held on the Friday of O-Week?
    A. YES! This meeting is compulsory. At this meeting you will be given information on the seminar courses on offer - enrolments in seminar courses are not possible until after you attend this meeting. If you cannot attend this meeting, contact Jennifer English ASAP at j.english@psy.uq.edu.au. The meeting is normally held from 10:00am - 12 noon on the Friday of Semester 1 O-week. Information confirming the date, room and time is forwarded to all Honours students with their offer letter.
  • Q. When will honours thesis supervisor allocations be announced?
    A. Thesis supervisors will be allocated in February prior to the commencement of classes. Students are advised of their allocated supervisor via email to their uq student account. Any students who have not submitted their supervisor preferences at this point will be allocated a supervisor at the School's discretion.
  • Q. How are supervisors allocated?
    A. Supervisors are matched to students based on the preferences stated in the supervisor preference form. We try to allocate students to their first choice supervisor but where that is impossible we match to the second or third choice, or else another un-nominated supervisor in the student's first choice content area (e.g., developmental). There are usually more students who want an Applied-professional supervisor than there are places in that area, so please do not be disappointed if you want to do an applied project but do not get assigned to a supervisor whose research is in that area.

Please note: The preference form is NOT first come-best dressed so take your time filling it in and submitting it.
  • Q. Does doing a clinical Honours project improve my chances of getting into a clinical postgraduate program?
    A. NO! The only thing that matters in your postgraduate application form is the grade of Honours; the area of your thesis is irrelevant.
