Master of Applied Psychology

Overview of the UQ Master of Applied Psychology Program

Welcome to the main information website for the University of Queensland's two-year Master of Applied Psychology program. The School of Psychology obtained conditional accreditation for this new program in 2009, from the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC). Our MAppPsych program provides students with the opportunity to gain the skills required for full registration as a psychologist with the Psychologists Board of Queensland. Appropriately qualified students are trained through a combination of coursework, research, and a series of supervised placements.

The aim of the course is to provide postgraduate students, registered as probationary psychologists, with the skills and knowledge required to practice competently and confidently within the psychological profession. Students are taught core professional skills (e.g., assessment administration skills, ethical issues associated with practising as a psychologist), as well as specialist content. Students are provided with the opportunity to use their skills and apply their knowledge through placements that are generously hosted by a range of institutions, including not-for-profit community service organisations, government departments, hospitals and other health care providers, commercial organisations and private practitioners within the South-East Queensland community.

Ours is the only postgraduate coursework degree available in Queensland that is accredited (conditionally) by APAC, which provides training in the following areas:

  • Applied Psychology
  • Counselling Psychology
  • Health Psychology
  • Sport and Exercise Psychology

Students select one of three streams, leading to the award of the Master of Applied Psychology (Sport & Exercise), the Master of Applied Psychology (Health) or the Master of Applied Psychology (Counselling), each of which will meet requirements for associate membership of the relevant College of the Australian Psychological Society.
