Gesture, speech, and the evolution of modernity

Abstract

The evolution of language will be traced from gestural communication in primates, through the evolution of syntax and theory of mind in the genus Homo, to the emergence of autonomous speech in our own species, Homo sapiens. This last step paved the way for modern human behaviour, and the final extinction of all other hominids.
