The BSSI is a free meeting that is designed to bring together academics from South East Queensland, interstate and overseas. The BSSI covers topics of interest to social psychologists and social science researchers more generally. It is a forum for the exchange of ideas, the discussion of theoretical and conceptual issues, the presentation of current research, and the establishment and strengthening of formal research connections in this field.

There is no registration fee and refreshments and lunch will be provided.  On Saturday evening, there will be the traditional symposium party (with food, nibbles, wine and other drinks provided).

We are pleased to present the following local, interstate and international speakers:

  • Kathleen Vohs (University of Minnesota). Title: Self-Control as a Limited Resource 
  • Joanne Smith (University of Exeter). Title: Congruent or conflicted? The interplay of descriptive and injunctive norms on behavior
  • Paul Bain (University of Queensland). Title: Religion. What is it (socially) good for?
  • Martha Augoustinos  (University of Adelaide). Title: Black or not black enough? Social identity in the political rhetoric of Barack Obama
  • Stephanie Tobin (University of Queensland). Title: Interpersonal attraction as a function of self and other uncertainty
  • Ken Mavor (Australian National University). Title: The person as a social category:  A self-categorisation theory of the personal self
  • Rebecca Wickes (University of Queensland). Title:  Collective efficacy and neighbourhood violence: Criminology's adaptation of a social psychological construct
  • Nick Haslam (University of Melbourne). Title:  More or less human: Ways to grant or deny humanness to people
