Following completion of her PhD, Nancy undertook postdoctoral training in her specialty area of geropsychology including fellowships at the Palo Alto Veteran's Hospital and the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute before joining the School in 2000. She is a practicing clinical geropsychologist and neuropsychologist and has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and books on various topics in the field of ageing. Her main research questions focus on older adults and span a range of clinical neuropsychological and psychosocial topics such as anxiety in later life, early assessment of dementia and improving training in geriatric mental health service provision. In 2010 she was awarded an Australian Davos Connection (ADC) Future Summit Leadership Award, based on her expertise and leadership in the field of geropsychology. She was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia in 2014, and is a Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society.

Professor Nancy A. Pachana

After receiving my Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University in 1992, I undertook post-doctoral training in my specialty area, geropsychology. I completed a fellowship in psychotherapeutic approaches with older adults at the Palo Alto Veteran's Hospital (Dolores Gallagher-Thompson, supervisor) and a two year fellowship in geriatric neuropsychology at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute in Los Angeles (Wilfred van Gorp, supervisor). I have been at the University of Queensland since December, 2000. I am both a practicing clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist as well as an active researcher and my area of expertise and enthusiastic interest is clinical geropsychology.

Originally from Newark, New Jersey, USA, I was awarded my AB from Princeton University in 1987, and my PhD from Case Western Reserve University in 1992. I completed postdoctoral fellowships at the Neuropsychiatric Institute at UCLA, Los Angeles, and the Palo Alto Veterans Medical Center, Palo Alto, California. I am fortunate to have a network of geropsychology collaborators and colleagues in Asia, Europe, North and South America, and Australia and New Zealand - all of us passionate about clinical research and practice with older people, as well as teaching and mentoring the next generation of geropsychologists.

I am an avid bird watcher and photographer and an intrepid traveller. I like cats, bushwalking and knitting. I am of Polish descent - dziękuję (thanks) and dzień dobry (good day)!
